“In today’s society, we don’t always have time to sit down to three square meals a day. I’m here to tell you don’t have to in order to eat well!” Kelly Spec, Registered Dietitian with Spectrum Nutrition.
Food, and eventually nutrition and health, are topics that permeate everything Kelly enjoys in life and has ever since she was a little girl barely able to reach the stove. This self-proclaimed ‘foodie’ was cooking with her mom at the ripe old age of three; her mother still recalls how difficult it was to eat Kelly’s first batch of scrambled eggs, but Kelly’s passion for food stuck. Kelly eventually made a career out of her love of food and graduated with Honors from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor’s degree in Science, majoring in Dietetics in 2008. Kelly is a Registered Dietitian and a member in good standing with the College of Dietitians of BC and Dietitians of Canada.
Having grown up in the unique situation where Kelly and her family grew, hunted, gathered and preserved their own food, Kelly has a deep appreciation for what she likes to call ‘food culture’. Having had these experiences has given Kelly the perspective that every person views and experiences food a little differently; it’s that understanding that has drove Kelly to shape the philosophy at Spectrum Nutrition:
“The guidelines of health are well documented in the literature, but how that looks in terms of an individual’s diet and food culture is different for everyone. Our 5 step process at Spectrum Nutrition enables clients to lose weight while following the guidelines to health, and in a manner that fits with their lifestyle and personal food culture” – Kelly Spec, RD, Founder of Spectrum Nutrition.
Kelly has been quoted saying “if you don’t cook when you meet me, you’re not going to start just by walking through our door…and you don’t have to in order to be healthy”. Many clients find it comforting that healthy weight loss doesn’t have to, and actually shouldn’t, mean changing everything you are just to follow a diet – the ‘diet’ has to fit you, not the other way around. Kelly spends countless hours carefully selecting and training dietitians that fundamentally embrace this philosophy so that each client at Spectrum leaves confident that they can comfortably lose weight and keep it off for good.
Kelly’s previous dietetic experiences touched the lives of many. During University, Kelly developed and implemented a community nutrition education program in conjunction with the food bank at AIDS VANCOUVER. This program is acclaimed nationwide and is currently in use in communities across the country including Vancouver and Toronto. Kelly has been well published for her dedication and commitment to nutrition research for this project and many others. She has subsequently been published in prestigious journals including the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, the Canadian Association for HIV Research and the Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research.
Although Kelly’s nutrition background is varied, her passion and commitment is focused on helping people lose weight while feeling confident and in control of their food choices.
